With the surge of elective hip replacement surgeries throughout North America, knowing the what and how of this common procedure is essential to any orthopedic therapy practice.

The following handout has been created for use by acupuncture practitioners, but can also be used as a general guide for most practitioners working with musculoskeletal conditions. Although this guide is fairly simple in its scope of information, the goal was to provide a quick and concise reference for assessment and treatment of patients during pre-op and post-operative hip replacement.

Here is a concise reference guide about TMJD or Temporomandibular Joint Disorder. The treatment protocols are geared towards acupuncturists, but the information is relative to all health-care practitioners. TMJD is a very common pathology seen in many acupuncture, massage, chiropractic, and physio clinical settings and therefore is important to be made aware of.

Of special interest to some acupuncturists are the motor points included in the treatment protocol. See the Motor Point Index: An Acupuncturists Guide to Locating and Treating Motor Points by Matt Callison for more info.

It’s been a while since I’ve added a new post as I’ve had my head in the books these past few weeks with the recent Fall semester starting. But have no fear my studying friends, there are more study guides to come! Look out for an Orthopedic Acupuncture Study Guide containing information related to basic physical assessment and treatment of the musculoskeletal system with motor point acupuncture techniques. All this information will have come directly or be related to ACU322 Orthopedics & Traumatology at Pacific Rim College.

Stay tuned and good luck studying!

The College of Chinese Medicine offers a number of diploma programs and continuing education/post-grad workshops related to acupuncture and Chinese Medicine. Among them is a 6-month Orthopedic Acupuncture Diploma course as well as a 2-day Spinal Acupuncture course focused specifically on needling the Hua Tuo Jiaji needling techniques – maybe something worth checking out???
